Name Game

So God's name made me start thinking about names (:
Achilles: From the Greek Αχιλλευς (Achilleus) which is of unknown meaning, perhaps derived from Greek αχος (achos) "pain
Odysseus: Perhaps derived from Greek οδυσσομαι (odyssomai) "to hate".Abraham: This name may be viewed either as meaning "father of many" in Hebrew or else as a contraction of ABRAM (1) and הָמוֹן (hamon) "many, multitude".
Eve: From the Hebrew name חַוָּה (Chawwah), which was derived from the Hebrew word חוה (chawah) "to breathe" or the related word חיה (chayah) "to live".
Adam: This is the Hebrew word for "man". It could be ultimately derived from Hebrew אדם ('adam) meaning "to be red", referring to the ruddy colour of human skin, or from Akkadian adamu meaning "to make".
Antigone: Means "against birth" from Greek αντι (anti) "against" and γονη (gone) "birth, offspring".
Sarah: Means "lady" or "princess" in Hebrew.
Rachel: From the Hebrew name רָחֵל (Rachel) meaning "ewe"
Moses: From the Hebrew name מֹשֶׁה (Mosheh) which is most likely derived from Egyptian mes meaning "son", but could also possibly mean "deliver" in Hebrew.
Aaron: From the Hebrew name אַהֲרֹן ('Aharon) which is most likely of unknown Egyptian origin. Other theories claim a Hebrew derivation, and suggest meanings such as "high mountain" or "exalted".

In some cases, like Odysseus I do not know why one would name their child that or how the meaning of their name was significant to their life. But in other cases of the above names, the significance of the name is so important, like Moses meaning deliverer. So that leaves me with the question. Do these people search for ways to become the name given to them or does it happen in a God coincidence? Who knows? I know I haven't been seeking out ways to become more sheeplike although possibly I should...Quieter, peaceful, and passive...

God's name is so cool. Something we should consider also when looking at this cool story where God reveals His name to Moses. Is that Israelites were SERIOUS about not taking the Lord's name in vain. They did not use God's name hardly at all. In fact when reading the Tanakh, they literally skipped over the word..and inserted "Adonai". It seems ridiculous to us, but it was their highest form of reverence (which by the way I think in our "hip" culture sometimes we lose the reverence for God, In the protestant reformations search to become less about tradition and less about liturgy and less about rules and regulations in some ways they lost the reference for God. Look at the way the Old Testament Temple was set up.) The way these people referenced their God is so cool! I think that has some influence on the reason why God doesn't reveal a "name" as we would consider a name, because they people did not say His name.

I read some other cool stuff on this website: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Names_of_G-d/YHVH/yhvh.html
I had a little help from: www.behindthename.com

  1. Good info on the names. I personally believe that your name helps shape who you are in life, and that parent's should seriously consider what they should name their children before they do so. A name is a truly powerful thing.

  2. I was wondering the same thing, yesterday, about how a person "fulfilled" their name, or how they got their name and it happened to be what they did in life. I like the way you asked, "Do these people search for ways to become the name given to them?" It made sense to me, and it seems like, if the answer to that is "yes", you would have a plan set, something to work for from the time you are born. In addition to your call to love God and others, you would know how you were meant to show your love for God and others.
