In class Tuesday we discussed a little bit about what the Exodus means to Christians. Last semester in TrueSpin was Pictures and Portraits of Jesus in the Old Testament and I'm not even sure that we discussed the Exodus. Think about it though. It's a beautiful picture of deliverance from bondage. A people who deserve nothing, given freedom by God by someone more humble than anyone would have suspected. At first, Moses's hesitance made him seem disobedient but I don't think obedience is about having no doubts of our own power to do something, it's ultimately trusting God to be God, which is what Moses did.
I think the Exodus is a picture of Jesus, thousands of years before He was even born. We were in bondage to sin, slaves in our own right to our fleshly desires. God sent Jesus to deliver us from that bondage through His power! Our true Deliverer is Jesus Christ. We deserve none of what He has given us but He chooses to deliver us anyway, to bring His glory!
A nice (and unplanned) segway into part two. We discussed why He would harden Pharoah's heart and ultimately that went into how could God do such a thing? It was said that God was "showing off." Well I make no apologies for what I am about to say in that if anyone has a reason to show off it's God! He created, loves, He is, He was, and He always will be! He saved us from eternal death and brought us into life, not because we deserve it or are entitled to a single thing but because He is holy! He is good and perfect. He is God. So if God wants to use something that I don't necessarily understand to bring Him glory then that's His choice to make! He is the only worthy of glory we were ultimately created to bring Him that glory! It's our job. It's the ONLY reason we're here. Praise the Lord that I don't understand everything He does because that would be one limited God.
I love this link from Old to New Testament.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely agree! Sometimes we talk about "worship" and what it means and why we need to. We worship God because He deserves it. When we say God was "showing off" we cannot say that lightly because God is perfect. In his perfection He cannot sin, He cannot become prideful. His "showing off" is not akin to our "showing off" because He deserves all honor glory and praise. His works bring people to the a greater understanding of His mystery...So essentially I agree a lot (:
Totally agree. This is similar to what I wrote my blog on. We cannot (and should not) always understand the way God works. He is so mysterious. But we know that our main goal as human beings is to bring HIM glory! I'm not sure if I would put it in the terms of Him "showing off," but He wants absolutely everything to know of His power and glory, and to know that He is in control!
ReplyDeleteI agree as well. I think God wants it to be that way. He is mysterious because thats just the way it should be. And yes, we are supposed to Glorify Him in all we do, doesnt mean we need to not learn more about God, but we dont know everything about him and really cant know everything.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you too. I think if anyone had the right to show off, it was God. He had to show how mighty his powers were in order for Pharaoh and everyone else to realize what a powerful being he is. Although I do have to wonder why He hardened Pharaoh's heart so much. He could have softened his heart so Pharaoh would have let the Israelites go. And if he had softened his heart, the egyptians wouldn't have gotten it so bad. I feel bad for them. I'm sure they were mean to the israelites too, but Pharaoh was the big meanie. Why couldn't God just hurt him?
