Once Again

I was impressed, I wrote it in my notes, and I’m still thinking about it today:

“I AM WHO I AM.”

In class Dr. Mashburn told us what the literal translation meant, which to me was even better: "I AM WHO I AM; I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE." Isn’t there something spell-bounding about that? When I read it, it made me stop in my tracks. I automatically paused in my reading. "I AM WHO I AM." What is it about this statement that makes it so powerful to me? I’m not exactly sure. I cannot describe it. It makes feel in awe. It seems as if the name carries the very presence of God, no matter how many times I hear it.

“I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE.” This makes me think back to the Iliad. God is not going to be persuaded one way or another, like Zeus. His thoughts are not wavering. He will not be affected. God will not be induced to do something against His better judgment. He will be who He will be.

God is who He is. He will be what He will be, no matter what. He was, what Moses was not. He is, what I am not. Once again, just like last week… I am so thankful.

P.S. I commented on Callie's post.

  1. Anna,

I really appreciated this post's reference to The Iliad. Way to tie it in. It is incredible to see, time after time, how the God of the Bible, the God we serve, is so superior to the gods man creates. Our God is BEYOND description. Words are powerful things, yet they do not even come close to capturing the essence of our God. Praise Him!

  2. I definitely got the same reaction when I read this. Before we started Exodus God had been showing me just how holy he actually is. Of course what my idea of holiness is nowhere near to how holy he actually is. On my Facebook I have completely erased my "bio" and it simply says "I am not, but I know I AM. My God, I am not, but You are" Do I have to say more? He's been blowing my mind lately so it was so awesome to have our reading be about the "I am" passage.
"Tell them I AM sent you"... I don't know but that's enough for me. He who doesn't have to be explained... he who is bigger than any box... bigger than any word we can use in our human language... sent me and told me to go!
