We all know from reading the Iliad that Zeus is the god that is in charge of the others. He is undoubtedly the strongest of the gods, but how much of a god is he? If he is so powerful, then he should have total control over every event that he chooses. Yet, I question his ability to control everything. After all, he had to pull out the scales before the battle started, and before he chose to observe it from Mount Ida. Did he do this as a sign that he is the top judge and that the scales have to obey him? Or did he pull the scales out because he had no choice, and that was a neccessary part in order to see the outcome of the war? If he was so almighty, then why did he have to pull those scales out? I think that even though he is the strongest god, there are still some things that are out of his control, such as the Fates. He can not alter the results of the scale once they have been weighed, so even Zeus, the almighty god, has to obey something. Since we know that, we can see that he isn't on the very top of everything. I knw that he would love to be able to control everything, due to his nature, but he can't control everything. He is the top god though, that is painfully clear, and he is already to express his power over others. He pulled out the scales though in front of all the gods so that everyone could see the results, and even he has to obey the scales, so even though he is the greatest of the gods, he is not the greatest being in existence.
And I commented on Malory's post.
We know that Zeus is the most powerful of the gods but is that because he is actually the strongest or the other gods have such a fear of him? You have to look at it from the standpoint of that Zeus is the father of alot of the gods on Olympos. I think that of his "power" actually comes from the respect the gods have for their father. Zeus led an overthrow of his father so is it not possible for the same thing to happen to him? But I believe that he will continue to be the most powerful until he is overthrown. Which leads to my point on the scales. I think that he uses the scales to give evidence of who he has chosen and that there is nothing that they can do about it.
