While reading the first chapter of Genesis I began to notice a trend- separation. God created light and separated it from dark. He created water and separated it with an expanse (sky), He then further separated it by adding land. He created various plants and trees separate from each other and with separate purposes (to yield different fruits, etc.). He also created animals separated into categories, birds of the air, sea, earth, etc. Then He created man. When He created man there was no separation. So when does separation enter the picture?
"Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of they day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, 'where are you?'" -Genesis 3:8-9
These two verses change everything. Formerly, man was not separated from God. But what does this question that the Lord asks symbolize? The question "where are you?" It symbolizes a broken relationship. They are separated. For the first time they are not together. Man was not separated from God until he CHOSE to be so. In choosing sin, man chose to be separated from God.
God created the earth, sky, plants, and animals with a purpose in mind. To yield light, to grow, and provide food, etc. Yet, His purpose for man was simply to be with Him. God wanted fellowship. He wanted togetherness. And guess what, He still does...
Your post reminded me of what Neal has been talking about in True Spin. Being separated from God makes everything meaningless.God created all the things of the world to draw us nearer to Him, not to lead us away from Him.
